The New Way Program
Homelessness is a
term that has so many different facets to it. A woman with children who
is homeless is usually that way due to some form of abuse. It may be
physical, domestic violence, no one likes to think it may happen to them
or someone they know, but it does. Every day in homes all across the
country. It does not play favorites to social or economic backgrounds.
It may be financial, the husband, boyfriend, partner has left her and
the children and she no longer has means of support, cannot pay the rent
and gets evicted. It could be verbal, she has made some poor choices and
her family has turned her away and will no longer support her. She may
have been a single mom and lost her job. Whatever the reason this
population is in crisis and the need to help is great and this is the
population New Way Ministries has decided to reach out to.
After a client has
been accepted into the New Way program she is assigned a room that is
furnished, along with bedding, towels and toiletries enough for her and
her children. All rooms have their own bathroom. There is a laundry room
in the facility. She is assigned pantry space and is given a padlock if
she so chooses to lock her food cabinet. She will share a refrigerator
with another family. If she has no food the Project Hope Food Bank
located in the same building can assist the family. If she has no
clothing for herself or her children, New Way can provide her with
enough items to get her through the next day when she can shop at
several resale stores. The Hope Chest and Salvation Army in Lynden will
take a voucher from New Way or Project Hope. Within 24 hours of entering
the program she will meet with the Family Services Manager who will case
manager with her on personal short and long term goals. If she has not
graduated from high school she will need to get her GED while at New
Way. Her children need to be currently immunized and in either day care
or school so that Mom can start moving forward and away from the
situation she is in now. New Way is a six- month transitional housing
program. We provide the tools, resources and support. We advocate for
and educate our clients. Parenting, finances and relationship issues are
among the many topics of group discussions at a weekly program night.
The children have a therapeutic play program covering area such as
feelings, manners and trust. Since we opened our doors in April 2003,
New Way has helped over 27 families in crisis. Ongoing families are not
only completing the program but are self sufficient and living on their
own. When a family completes the program and is ready to move out, all
of the furnishings and household items may be taken with her to set up
household. New Way provides a follow up program for the women when they
leave. Some of the clients keep in contact with us, others are happy to
have had that part of their lives behind them and don’t look back. The
staff, volunteers and supporters of the program are all happy and
honored to be a small part of the life changing choices the residents at
New Way make.
